On 17 June 2010, SIRF and Central Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Tribhuvan University (TU) organised Research Mentors’ Workshop under the chairmanship SIRF Screening Committee (SIRF-SC) Chairman, Dr. Ganesh Man Gurung. The workshop aimed at envisioning a modality of mentoring to enhance research capacity of SIRF researchers. In the preliminary session, SIRF-SC Member Dr. Mukta Tamang argued with mentors to envisage an analytical approach to bring out critical issues of social exclusion. Dr. Manju Tuladhar of SIRF gave debriefing on SIRF research funding process.
In the first session, three eminent social science intellects – Prof Dr Chaitanya Mishra, Dr. Sumitra M Gurung and Prof. Dr. Yogendra Yadav held a discussion on Theories and Practices of Social Science Research in Nepal. A debate on evolution of various social science schools in Nepal and how they provide platform to promote and debacle social inclusion and exclusion agenda also took place at the programme. The session was moderated by Prof R B Chhetri. The second session of the programme was focused on sharing experiences of mentoring social inclusion researches where SIRF’s former research supervisors and researchers highlighted on supervision modality of SIRF’s past researches, how it benefited the researchers, what its drawbacks are and what the current SIRF researchers will expect. The session was moderated by SIRF-SC Member Madan Pariyar.
The mentors also penned mentors’ contract at the programme where Prof Dr Om Gurung debriefed on the terms and conditions of the contract. Kristine Storholt of the Royal Norwegian Embassy (RNE)-Kathmandu concluded the programme with a short note on refining SIRF mentoring modality.
