Interaction Workshop with Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Cabinet Minister of India

SIRF, along with other Dalits based NGOs, had a fortune to jointly organize an Interaction Workshop on “Constitution Building in Nepal: Sharing Indian Experience on Dalits Prespective” on 4th March 2009 with Ram Vilas Paswan, Honorable Indian Union Cabinet Minister during his official visit in Nepal. The workshop had participant from Academician, Dalit Activists, Constitutional Assemble Members, SIRF ISC Members, SIRF researchers and other stakeholder. Mr. Hira Bishwokarma, SIRF ISC member representing Dalits, gave the welcome speech in the program in which he highlighted the leading issues of Dalit inclusion in Nepal. He remarked that the Government of Nepal had undermined the Dalits in the development process so the socio- economic status of Dalits is miserable. He alerted that Dalits inclusion issues should be substantially raised in the current constitutional building process of Nepal.
Mr. Paswan, key speaker of the program, highlighted the India’s experience of Dalit Inclusion and its challenges. He explained the challenges that Nepal might face as being a new federal state and stress to enhance the capacity of all concern stakeholder to address such challenges. He further stressed for the Dalit inclusive provision in the new constitution of Nepal. Tek Bahadur Raikap, President of Dalit NGO Federation, chaired the program. SIRF secretariat presented it’s publication to Mr. Paswan and the members of its delegation.
